Imphal, Oct 12 (IANS) Four hard-core militants of different factions of the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) and three drug smugglers, including a policeman, have been arrested in Manipur in the last 24 hours. Officials gave this information on Sunday.
A police officer said four terrorists were arrested from Thoubal and Bishnupur districts, and some arms and ammunition were recovered from the possession of one terrorist, identified as Moirangthem Mohan Singh alias Pari, 42.
The arms and ammunition recovered from the arrested militants include one SM carbine with one magazine, two AK rifle magazines, 24 rounds (bullets) of AK rifle ammunition, a camouflage T-shirt and a mobile phone with two SIM cards.
The arrested extremists were involved in various crimes including extortion from people, government employees and contractors.
The officer also said that Mohammad Wahidur Rehman, 43, was arrested from Imphal West district and 544 illegally purchased medicines weighing about 301 grams were seized from his possession.
“Investigation has revealed that the arrested person is a rifleman serving with Manipur Police,” the officer said.
An official statement said that Manipur Police reiterates its strong stand against the guilty members who are found involved in any illegal activities related to drugs.
Apart from disciplinary action, FIR incorporating criminal charges is mandatorily filed against such offenders.
In another incident, security forces arrested two drug smugglers from different areas of Khergao Awang Likai areas under Imphal East district. The two were identified as Mohammad Khurshid Alam, 21, and Mohammad Akbar, 37.
From their possession, about 3 kg of heroin, and eight bottles of psychotropic Tusserex-TR syrup, drug sales amount of Rs 9.57 lakh, one SBBL gun with two cartridges, one car and four mobile phones were recovered.
Security forces also recovered some arms and ammunition from Imphal West district during their search operations. The recovered arms and ammunition include, one .303 rifle with one magazine, one modified .303 rifle with one magazine, five pistols with one magazine, five helmets, four bullet proof jackets cum magazine pouches, eight plates used with bullet proof jackets, one wireless hand held set with charger, ten pairs of camouflage pants and others. Camouflage shirt, and four bags.
The official said security forces are continuing search operations and area dominance in the border and sensitive areas of the districts.
Meanwhile, movement of more than 340 vehicles carrying essential commodities has been ensured without any incident on the Imphal-Jiribam National Highway (NH-37) during the last 24 hours. Strict security measures are taken at all sensitive locations, and security convoys are provided in sensitive stretches to ensure free and safe movement of vehicles.
According to the official, a total of 115 nakas/checkpoints were set up in various districts in both the hill and valley areas to prevent untoward and illegal activities of anti-social elements and suspicious vehicles.
