Four children were killed when an apartment caught fire while their father was out of the home running errands, according to police.

Investigators confirmed that four siblings were killed in the fire in Memphis, Tennessee after the blaze broke out in a two storey apartment building at around 3pm on Wednesday afternoon.

Their grandfather Patrick Davis confirmed the children were aged between six and two years old.

The victims names were Marcus, Markese, Malaysia, and Makayla Walker.

Mr Davis added that the three-year-old had celebrated her birthday just one day before the nightmare incident.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing and authorities said they detained the father, who was out running errands at the time the fire took hold.

The father, who has not yet been named, told a witness he left briefly to run an errand down the street, according to FOX13.

According to WREG, Memphis police confirmed they have detained the father, but no other details have been released.

In total, 50 members of the department attended the scene of the blaze.

A witness told WREG she and her boyfriend were driving down the residential street when they noticed flames and smoke coming from the building.

The deceased children’s great-grandmother said: “I’m so hurt and sad that all of them had to go.

“And this was a sad way for them to go. Four children. I can’t understand it. But God, He knows best.”
