Chico, whose real name is Yousseph Slimani, appears in 2005 television talent show series Later, he released a number one single, “It’s Chico time.”
The 54-year-old man was charged with drink driving on Chase Way, Southgate, on December 13.
Willesden Magistrates’ Court heard on Tuesday that Slimani, from north London, was accused of driving a Vauxhall Astra with 40 micrograms of alcohol in 100 milliliters of breath.
In England, the legal alcohol limit for driving is 35 micrograms per 100 milliliters.
Defendant Sarah King said the defendant, who appeared in court wearing a black fur coat and cowboy hat, took cough medicine before the reading, which may have affected accuracy.
Slimani pleaded not guilty and was granted bail until his trial on April 9.
The singer became a TV icon with his tongue-in-cheek attitude and energetic performances after competing on the reality singing competition in 2005.
Slimani, who was born in Bridgend, Wales, but spent much of his childhood in Morocco, reached the quarter-finals of that year’s competition, where he was eventually won by Shane Ward.
“It’s Chico Time” remains his most successful as a recording artist, reaching number one in Scotland and number three in Ireland. He is the first single to debut at number one on The X Factor Runners Up.
He subsequently appeared on a number of reality TV shows, including ice dancing, Where to get first place. He has also appeared in many celebrity specials, such as in completely eliminated, and contributes to several different charity projects.
2018It was confirmed that Slimani was rushed to the hospital after suffering a stroke.
His family said at the time: “We can confirm that Chico has unfortunately suffered a stroke. This is a huge shock to Chico, his wife and two children, as well as his close friends and family. We thank you in advance for allowing Chico and the family some privacy at this time.”
“Chico is currently undergoing further testing and further announcements will be made soon.”
Chico married Daniyela Rakic in 2008. They have two children, Lalla-Kira and Zacharia.
