East circulation editor in chief anna wintour said Victoria Beckham The former singer “proved us completely wrong” after making initial assumptions about it.
Wintour says she was skeptical at first and thought the former Spice Girl’s fashion label was a “hobby”.
Beckham, 51, talked about his path fashion industry In her new, eponymous Netflix The series – which features interviews with celebrities including Dame Anna, Tom Ford and Donatella Versace.
Speaking on the show, Wintour says: “I look at her as a Spice Girl, and we admire her sense of style and her commitment to fashion, but most of the celebrities who join our world are not true designers.
“I thought maybe it was a hobby. I didn’t believe it at all.”
Lady Beckham says Dame Anna, 75, would not attend her shows despite invitations until her curiosity was finally piqued.
Dame Anna says, “People said how much they enjoyed Victoria’s show and how much fun it was, and so I became intrigued.”
“I was sceptical. I think we can all be a bit snobby in the fashion business, and think maybe it’s an extra gig, but Victoria was a woman who proved us completely wrong.
“It was clear there was a vision there. There was a vision for people to recognize what she wanted, and she achieved it with grace, charm and humility.”

Lady Beckham founded her eponymous label in 2008, the same year she finished the Spice Girls reunion tour and split from her bandmates.

Reflecting on this time, Ford says: “I remember when I first heard that Victoria was going to start her own fashion label, and I wanted to call her up and say, ‘Why? Why would you do that? Do you understand that this business is so hard?'”
He adds: “I think a lot of people didn’t take it seriously. I think a lot of people thought, ‘Oh, OK, Victoria Beckham is starting a collection. Maybe someone else will design it. She’ll stick her name on it. Not be too serious’.”
Versace says: “I thought she was very, very brave.”
In another interview, Lady Beckham’s close friend, American actress Eva Longoria, revealed that people were warning the designer “you will not be accepted”.
“‘Oh, here’s another celebrity who wants to be a fashion person.’ Everyone was coming out in a queue. Jessica Simpson had a line, and Paris Hilton had a line”, she adds.
Longoria is godparent to Lady Beckham’s two children – Cruz, 20, and Harper, 14 – with her husband Sir David.
Lady Beckham says: “There was a slim chance that I was going to be successful, but I didn’t really pay attention to that. It drove me to be completely honest.”
Many celebrities have worn items from Lady Beckham’s fashion line, including Madonna, who wore a black zip-up dress in W Magazine in 2009.
Lady Beckham’s company has not made an operating profit since its formation in 2008.
However, in 2024, the label founded by the former Spice Girl recorded sales growth for the fourth consecutive year.
She also has a self-titled beauty brand which she launched in 2019.
Her new self-titled Netflix series follows her preparation for Paris Fashion Week, the highlight of the fashion calendar, as well as a look at the steps she took to get there.
