Independent have contacted New South Wales Police The comment came after the force posted a statement that appeared to reference Wednesday’s alleged attack — though without naming Mokhtarian as the victim.
“One person has been killed in a shooting at a public place in Sydney’s west today,” the statement said. “At approximately 6pm this evening, emergency services were called to Analuke Street, Riverstone, following reports of shots fired.
“Officers attached to Riverstone Police Area Command attended and found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics, however he died at the scene. The man has not yet been formally identified.
“Police established a crime scene and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. A short time later, at around 6.15am, emergency services were called to Riverstone Road, near Clarke Street, following reports of a car on fire.
“Fire and defend [SIC] NSW crews attended and extinguished the fire, however, the vehicle was destroyed. Police have established a second crime scene and are working to establish whether the two incidents are linked.
Mokhtarian competed twice in the UFC, once in 2018 and once in 2019, losing both of his bouts in the featherweight division.

Jesse Swain was among Mokhtarian’s teammates to pay tribute, writing on Instagram: “Couldn’t sleep tonight after hearing the news so decided to post this now, First of all I want to say that Suman believed in me more than I believed in myself.
“I am indebted to you for everything you have done mma Him. Anyone who knew him personally knows how passionate and invigorating he was and he expected nothing but the best from you. They have taken me to heights I never thought I would be able to reach in the beginning.
“He stopped me from leaving at the end of 2024 just before I got my professional opportunity and he personally told me about my potential in the game. “I will make sure that I can fulfill that potential. RIP Suman.”
Ali Hassan, another teammate, wrote on Instagram, “Allah please have mercy. It has hurt my family so much for the things she has done to us. Suman pulled me out of the gutter, took care of me when I needed it most.”
