Once described by manager Brian Clough as “the Picasso of our game”, Robertson became a cult hero at Forest.
He began and ended his career at the City Ground against local rivals derbyand is remembered for being an integral part in the club’s European Cup wins in 1979 and 1980.
Robertson provided a cross for Trevor Francis to score the only goal against the Swedish team malmo In Munich, Klose’s team won the European Cup for the first time.
His 2012 biography Supertramp details how Clough described him as “stupid, inept, a waste of time”, but he then became “one of the finest players of football I have ever seen, as good as the Brazilians or the Italians”.
Twelve months after the win in Munich, Robertson scored in a 1–0 win as Forest successfully defended their European crown against Hamburg at the Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid.
He won 28 caps for Scotland during his five-year international career, which included playing in the 1982 World Cup.
A statement from Forest said: “We are saddened to announce the passing of Nottingham Forest legend and dear friend, John Robertson.
“A true great of our club and a double European Cup winner, John’s unmatched talent, humility and unwavering dedication to Nottingham Forest will never be forgotten.
“Our thoughts are with John’s family, friends and everyone who loved him.
“Rest in peace, Robo… our greatest.”
