Srinagar: A former managing director (MD) of the Jammu and Kashmir Cooperative Central Land Development Bank was on Tuesday convicted by a court of forging date of birth and sentenced to two years in jail.

Crime Branch Kashmir’s Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) in a statement said it has convicted Mohammad Shafi Bande, former managing director of Jammu and Kashmir Cooperative Central Land Development Bank Ltd, for fudging his date of birth to illegally extend his service tenure.

“The case arose from a complaint alleging that the accused had knowingly produced a fake certificate and recorded his date of birth as 01.09.1939 instead of his actual year of birth, 1934.

“An investigation was initiated by Crime Branch Kashmir, during which verification manipulation was confirmed and further established that his actual date of birth was 26.06.1932.

“Subsequently, a formal case was registered in the Crime Branch Kashmir (now Economic Offenses Wing). During investigation, the allegations were confirmed, which revealed that the accused remained in service for more than seven years, causing wrongful gain to him and causing loss to the state exchequer.

“Accordingly, a charge sheet was filed before the Hon’ble Court for judicial determination. After full hearing, the Hon’ble Court of City Judge, Srinagar found the accused guilty under Sections 420, 468 and 471 RPC, sentenced him to two years’ simple imprisonment in each case and a fine of Rs 5,000 per offence.

“All the sentences will run concurrently. This sentence underlines the unwavering commitment of the EOW to promote transparency, accountability and integrity in public service,” the statement said.
