a judge in Mexico Former football player Omar Bravo will stand trial on charges of abusing a teenage girl, it was ruled Friday.
Bravo, 45, who played for Mexico at the 2006 World Cup and competed in the 2004 Olympics, was arrested last Sunday in the nearby suburb of Zapopan. GuadalajaraOne of the three largest cities in the country.
Bravo allegedly abused his girlfriend’s 17-year-old daughter over the past six years. If found guilty, the former striker could face a prison sentence of five to 10 years.
The judge ruled that due to the nature of the alleged crime, Bravo would have to remain in prison for at least the next six months. In Mexico, pretrial detention is applied if the accused is considered a threat to society or due process.
Juan Soltero, the victim’s lawyer, said, “For these types of crimes, because of their seriousness, the law provides these types of measures. Six months is a possible time limit because if the trial lasts longer, he will have to spend more time in pre-trial detention.”
The defense, led by Soltero, also presented 42 screenshots and a video recording of the conversation between Bravo and the girl.
Bravo played 66 matches Mexican National team and scored 15 goals. He retired in 2018 as Chivas’ all-time leading scorer. Chivas is one of the two most popular teams in Mexico.
