Kolkata, Nov 2 (IANS) Mainul Haq, a five-time former Congress MLA from Farakka assembly constituency in West Bengal’s Murshidabad who later joined the Trinamool Congress, died on Sunday, party sources confirmed.
He was 63 and had suffered a cardiac arrest in September.
Since then he is undergoing treatment in a hospital in Kolkata. However, he breathed his last on Sunday morning.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to social media to condole Haq’s death.
In an ex-post on Sunday, Chief Minister Banerjee said, “I express my deep condolences on the demise of my political colleague Moinul Haq. He was a former MLA from Farakka constituency and was working with us at the top level of the party for the last few years. My deepest condolences go out to his family, friends and supporters.”
Mainul Haq entered politics from Congress.
He started his political career as a student leader.
In 1996, he became MLA from Farakka assembly constituency of Murshidabad district for the first time on Congress ticket.
He defeated Abu Hasnat Khan, the then CPI-M MLA from that constituency.
Later he won from Farakka assembly constituency for five consecutive times on Congress ticket.
He always held opposition seats in the West Bengal Assembly.
While in Congress, he became a member of AICC (All India Congress Committee).
He worked as a Congress observer in Jammu and Kashmir for a long time.
In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly election, Mainul Haq was defeated by Trinamool Congress’s Monirul Islam from Farakka constituency.
In the same year, he left Congress by writing a letter to Congress leader Sonia Gandhi.
He joined the Trinamool Congress at the end of the year in the presence of party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
He was then made the vice president of the state Trinamool Congress unit.
After the death of the influential Trinamool Congress leader from Murshidabad district, Abhishek Banerjee also expressed his condolences on social media.
