Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 30 (IANS) In a horrific incident of violence, a retired Coast Guard officer allegedly killed his 76-year-old mother at their home in Kalliyur late on Wednesday night following a drunken fight.
The victim, Vijayakumari, was found dead with deep wounds all over her body at her residence, Lakshmi Nivas, in Paklur.
His son, Ajaykumar, who has a long history of alcohol addiction, was arrested by the Nemom police after the shocking incident.
According to the police, only mother and son lived in the house.
Around 11 pm, Ajaykumar drank one bottle of liquor and reached for another, leading to a heated argument with his elderly mother, who tried to stop him from drinking more liquor.
Angered by this, while she was eating an apple, he allegedly picked up a kitchen knife and attacked her.
Vijayakumari ran out of the house to save herself, but Ajaykumar followed her into the courtyard near the well of the house and stabbed her mother several times with a knife.
He allegedly slit her throat and cut veins on her hands and legs before pouring alcohol on her body and trying to set her on fire.
Hearing the screams of the elderly woman, the neighbors became alert and reached the spot and informed the police.
When he tried to intervene, the accused threw a liquor bottle at him.
Police later collected CCTV footage showing parts of the incident.
Investigators said Ajaykumar had undergone several rounds of treatment at drug de-addiction centers and was living with his mother due to strained relations with other family members.
As a retired Coast Guard officer, he had access to alcohol through the military canteen and stored several bottles at home.
Police believe the immediate provocation was his mother’s warning against opening a second bottle of liquor after the first.
Two other children of Vijayakumari, a former employee of the Commissioner’s office, are alive.
Nemom police have registered a case of murder and taken Ajaykumar into custody.
