California law enforcement officers shot and killed a former sheriff’s deputy on Tuesday after they suspected him of stabbing his 11-year-old son.
According to authorities, police in Elk Grove, about 25 miles from Sacramento, responded to a call around 8 a.m. from a mother who was concerned for the safety of her children after seeing their father attack her son on home security footage.
Police said responding officers found the boy suffering from stab wounds. He later died in a hospital from his injuries. His 6-year-old sister was not injured.
The Elk Grove Police Department confirmed to KCRA-TV that the suspect was 40-year-old Marvin Morales, a former Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputy.
By the time responding officers discovered her stabbed son, Morales had fled the scene. According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, he was seen driving southbound on I-5.
The pursuit ended in a crash near Lodi when the California Highway Patrol deployed a spike strip. The suspect was shot by officers after the collision, officials said. He died in a hospital.
At a news conference, a Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said Sheriff Jim Cooper was one of the first law enforcement officers to spot the suspect vehicle on southbound I-5 and Pocket Road.
Sheriff’s Sergeant Morales was fired from the agency in February 2024 after being caught using illegal drugs. Amar Gandhi told the journalists.

At least two deputies were involved in Tuesday’s shooting, Gandhi said. Elk Grove police said one of their officers was also involved. None of the deputies or officers were hurt.
It was not immediately known whether Morales fired at law enforcement. Authorities said an unloaded gun was found at the suspect’s home.
The Sheriff’s Office said the shooting is under investigation and, in accordance with department protocol, the two deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave.
