Brazil’s Federal Police has arrested the former President jair bolsonaro Authorities said the precaution on Saturday, days before he was to begin a 27-year prison sentence for leading the coup attempt.
The embattled former leader was taken to police force headquarters in the capital, Brasilia, a close aide said.
The force said in a brief statement, which did not name Bolsonaro, that it acted at the request of Brazil Supreme Court,
Neither Brazil’s federal police nor the Supreme Court provided further details.
Bolsonaro aide Andrea Sirino confirmed to The Associated Press that the arrest took place around 6 a.m. Saturday.
Cirino said the 70-year-old former president was taken to the federal police headquarters from his home in a gated community near Jardim Botanico.
Bolsonaro, who was Brazil’s president from 2019 to 2022, was expected to begin serving his sentence sometime next week after exhausting all appeals of his sentence for leading the coup attempt, local media reported.
