Kolkata, Nov 3 (IANS) Former West Bengal forest minister Jyotipriya Mallik, who was arrested by Enforcement Directorate (ED) sleuths in the ration distribution scam, was attacked in front of his house in Kolkata’s Salt Lake area. Police gave this information.
According to the police, Mallik was attacked by an unknown person on Sunday.
The attacker punched the former minister on his face and made him fall on the road.
After the incident, the police has arrested the accused youth.
According to police sources, Mallik, also known as Balu Da, had come to his home in Salt Lake from Habra in North 24 Parganas district on Sunday.
He also has an office in his house in Salt Lake.
The former minister was attacked while entering his office.
Then a young man came and punched Mallik on his face, due to which he fell on the road.
He kept shouting for help.
At that time, some Trinamool Congress workers, who were in Mallick’s office, ran to stop the youth.
According to Trinamool Congress sources, the youth was so desperate to attack Mallik that even three-four people could not stop him.
Mallick was eventually saved after more Trinamool workers joined in.
The incident was immediately informed to the police.
Policemen reached the spot and arrested the young man.
The former minister suffered minor injuries on his face. However, he is fine at the moment and did not need to be admitted to the hospital.
When the police arrested the accused youth, Mallik interrogated him.
According to sources close to Mallik, the Trinamool MLA does not know the accused.
They also examined the CCTV footage of Mallik’s house.
On examining the footage, the Trinamool MLA came to know that the youth was waiting in front of the house since 3 pm on Sunday afternoon.
The accused had gone missing once. However, after some time he again appeared in front of Mallik’s house and attacked him as soon as he reached there.
However, it is not clear why the accused attacked the Trinamool MLA.
Incidentally, Mallik was recently involved in the ration distribution scam case.
He was arrested by ED in 2023.
After spending 14 months in jail, he was released on bail on 15 January.
Even after his arrest, Mallik remained in Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s cabinet for a long time.
Later, he was removed from the post of Cabinet Minister in the Government of West Bengal.
