Trump claimed on Wednesday (October 15) that PM Modi told him that India will stop buying oil from Russia.
“On the question of whether there was any conversation or telephone call between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump, I am not aware of any conversation yesterday.” Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said this to the media on Thursday (October 16) evening.
A delegation of Indian negotiators is in the US to pursue trade talks with the US, which has imposed 50% tariffs on India that came into effect on August 27, 2025. Trump had admitted last month that imposing heavy tariffs on India was “not an easy thing”.

“Protecting the interests of Indian consumers in an unstable energy landscape has been India’s consistent priority,” Jaiswal said. This stance received positive support from Russia.
“Ensuring stable energy prices and secure supply have been the twin goals of India’s energy policy. Broadening and diversifying energy sourcing to meet market conditions is part of India’s energy policy,” Jaiswal said.
Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov also supported India’s stance of prioritizing public welfare. Alipov had said, “Much credit goes to the Indian government for prioritizing the welfare of its citizens and ensuring access to affordable energy.”
Alipov said, “Attempts by the so-called Global North to craft a neo-colonial unilateral approach, including legal sanctions and tariffs, and to instigate conflicts and trade wars to maintain dominance only highlight its reluctance to accept the emergence of a multipolar world.”
