Forced switch to e-bikes causes inconvenience: 31% of Delhi residents surveyed by LocalCircles

A survey by LocalCircles found that at least 31% of Delhi residents would be inconvenienced by the mandatory switch to e-bikes.

The survey received more than 10,000 responses from Delhi residents. A total of 69% of the respondents were male and 31% were female.

In November 2023, the Delhi government issued a notification titled Delhi Motor Vehicle Aggregator and Delivery Service Provider Scheme 2023, under which only e-bike taxis will be allowed to operate in the national capital. On January 22, the central government issued an advisory notice to state governments to allow motorcycles to operate legally as contract transportation in India.

The survey

The survey asked Delhi residents: “Will the requirement that all bike taxis be electric cause any inconvenience to you, your family, employees and businesses?”

Of the 10,979 responses received, 31% said “Yes, it is an inconvenience”; 13% said “No, it is not an inconvenience as we do not use alternative transport”; 56% said this The question is “not applicable” (I, my family, my employees, or my business do not use bike taxis).

The survey revealed that 44% of Delhi residents or their families/employees/businesses had used bike taxis one or more times in 2022-23, with 31% saying they switched to e-bike taxis due to fewer bikes available caused inconvenience.

The survey was conducted through the LocalCircles platform and all participants are verified citizens and must be registered with LocalCircles to participate in the survey.
