England And wales Players walk out with football fans suffering from dementia in front of them wembley friendly.
The match is named as the Alzheimer’s Society International, the fourth edition since the partnership between the charity and football Association Launched in 2021.
22 adults were nominated from England and Wales to represent different types of dementia – an umbrella term for a number of diseases associated with the ongoing decline in brain function – and they took the place of traditional child mascots.
One of them, Andy Paul, 66, said: “I didn’t think I would ever do something like this at this age and I was absolutely overwhelmed when I heard the news.
“I will cherish this opportunity – it will be incredibly special to see my family there and share this moment with them.
“I also hope it will show people that dementia isn’t necessarily what you can expect and that being diagnosed doesn’t mean you suddenly stop doing the things you love.”
22 people also stood with the players during the national anthem and were given a warm welcome from the Wembley crowd.
In keeping with previous Alzheimer’s Society International events, players wore shirts with no names on the back during the second half to highlight memory loss, a key symptom of dementia.
England Boss thomas tuchel Glad to be shining a light on a topic that affects so many people.
“We’re very happy that we can take a topic like this and bring it into the spotlight,” he said before the game.
“I think it’s just a positive thing we can do as a national team and I know the players are happy to contribute to things like this.
“It makes you aware of how lucky we are and how privileged we are and makes us very, very grateful.
“So, all the best wishes and full support go out to all the people affected, all the families who are affected and please stay strong.”
