Food Safety Department cracks on street food vendors, impose a fine of Rs 56,000

Srinagar, 01 August: In following directions from the administration to ensure public health and food security, the Food Security Wing of Drugs and Food Control Organization has launched a thorough campaign against street food vendors who violate hygiene and sanitary norms under the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA).

As part of this enforcement campaign, various places were inspected in the district Srinagar including Pantchowak, Karan Nagar, Batamalu and Hazratbal.

During the inspection, 44 street food vendors were found to have a non-compliance with the prescribed standards and a total fine of the rupee. 56,000/- was imposed.

The inspection teams examined the raw materials, components and finished food products introduced by these vendors.

The food items, which are disqualified for human consumption, were destroyed on the spot. The vendors were strictly directed to follow the Good Hygdonic Practice (GHP) and were instructed not to use newspapers or non-food grade utensils for food preparation or sale.

The department has reiterated that strict action will be taken against the defaulters as per the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act.
