Guwahati, Nov 3 (IANS) While Assam is mourning the untimely demise of cultural icon Zubeen Garg, the state’s artistic fraternity suffered another heartbreaking blow with the demise of renowned flautist Deepak Sarma on Monday.
The acclaimed musician breathed his last at a Chennai hospital around 6.15 am after a prolonged illness.
Sarma, known for his heart-touching tunes on the flute, was battling serious health complications for the last several months.
He was first admitted to a hospital in Guwahati, but was later taken to Chennai for advanced treatment as his condition deteriorated. Despite continued medical efforts, the veteran musician could not recover.
Born in Panigaon village of Nalbari district, Sarma’s journey from a small-town artiste to one of the most celebrated flute players of Assam was marked by perseverance and unmatched musical talent.
His mastery on the instrument has earned him praise across the region and beyond. Known for blending classical sensibilities with Assamese folk nuances, his flute compositions often became the defining element of many Assamese musical productions. However, in a poignant turn of events, Sarma’s last days were marked by financial hardship.
The respected artist reportedly faced severe financial constraints during his treatment.
In October, Assam Chief Minister Su Basava Sarma had extended funding of Rs 5 lakh to support his medical expenses.
Tributes poured in from artists, fans and cultural institutions across Assam. Many described him as a humble and dedicated musician who held the spirit of Assamese folk music in his heart.
The demise of Deepak Sarma, soon after the death of Zubeen Garg, has deepened the sense of loss in the cultural landscape of Assam. Both the artistes, though different in their styles, share a common passion for enriching the musical heritage of the state – a legacy that continues to resonate across generations.
