The owner of Pornkamol Prangpremri, whose riverside eatery has been running for more than 30 years, recalled that his heart sank when it first flooded four years ago, a stark contrast to its current viral success.
“I thought there would definitely be no customers,” she said. “But then a customer came and posted online that the fish were there. Then a lot of people flocked here to eat.”
He said the floods have boosted his business, doubling his profits from about 10,000 baht ($309) to about 20,000 baht ($618) a day.
Chomphunuth Khantaniti, 29, who lives in the same province, was there with her husband and son. She said she couldn’t resist when she heard it.
“I think it’s good, because we can bring the kids here. When the kids see the fish, they’re less nervous,” he said. “I think in Thailand, this is the only place where you can see fish coming like this.”
Bella Windy, 63, came to the restaurant because she wanted to feel a fish nibbling her legs.
“Normally, if the water is very high, the fish will come here. The nature experience here is the main attraction of this restaurant and it attracts people.”
Pa Jit can expect flooding over the next few weeks, as water levels remain high at high tide and at the end of the monsoon season.
Although the flood has brought an unusual boon to Pa Jit, it has devastated many other areas of Thailand.
According to data from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, 12 people have died and two have gone missing due to the floods since late July.
On Friday, it reported that more than 480,000 people in 13 provinces, especially in the north and center, were affected by floods.
