A flamingo that escaped from a wildlife sanctuary cornwall seen off the north-west coast FranceMuch to the surprise of its keepers.
Young female flamingo Frankie at Paradise Park, near Hayle, has been confirmed alive and well, with staff expressing both surprise at her visit and relief at her condition.
Her escape occurred on Sunday, 2 November, when despite having her wings clipped, she managed to take off.
An initial sighting saw her near Porthtowan, about 13 miles away, followed by a sighting at Hayle later that afternoon.
Just over a week later, Frankie is believed to have been seen in France.
Posting on social media, the park said: “A flamingo has been spotted off the coast of Brittany in France.
“There is a population of Greater Flamingos in southern France that look very similar to Frankie, but we believe we can see that the feathers on the right wing have been clipped.”
In an additional post, it continued: “Flamingos are capable of flying such distances, but we are still amazed to see him travel so far and also relieved to see him so fit.
“She’s got a wonderful, protected estuary system and should be able to feed. We’ll update as soon as we learn more.”
Paradise Park director Nick Reynolds said how to bring Frankie home was the “million dollar question”.
“The reality of bringing him back to Britain is very slim,” he said.
“We don’t know what we’re going to do.”
Mr Reynolds said that in the meantime, he hopes Frankie will be found by a colony of greater flamingos in south-west France, calling it “the best possible thing at the moment” as the sanctuary figures out how to bring his beloved girl back home.
