57-year-old Saraogi, a former cabinet minister in the Bihar government, is an MLA from Darbhanga constituency. He succeeds Dilip Jaiswal, who was appointed to the post less than two years ago.
BJP national general secretary Arun Singh said in a notification, “Bharatiya Janata Party national president Jagat Prakash Nadda has appointed Sanjay Saraogi as the state president of Bharatiya Janata Party in Bihar with immediate effect.”
Reacting to the appointment, Saraogi told reporters that BJP is a party in which even an ordinary worker can reach any level. “The party has given me this responsibility and I will give my best. For me, the party is like my mother. We will work together to strengthen the BJP and ensure better coordination between the state government and the party,” he said.
“BJP is the only party where attention is paid to the performance of each worker,” Saraogi said.
In a post on X, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar congratulated Saraogi on becoming the president of the new Bihar unit of the BJP.
Kumar said, “He has worked with us as a ministerial associate in the state cabinet. He has been elected MLA for the fifth time. Best wishes to him for this new responsibility.”
Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar and Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary also congratulated Saraogi.
Chaudhary wrote on Twitter, “Under your leadership, the Bihar BJP organization will definitely do historic work with a new energy and spirit of public service.”
Later, speaking to reporters, the deputy CM said: “The appointment of Saraogi as Bihar BJP chief is like a double dose for the party… The first dose was the appointment of Nitin Nabin as national working president. The decision of the top leadership will enable the BJP to stand strongly in the 2029-30 elections.” It is understood that Jaiswal has been replaced keeping in mind the BJP’s declared policy of ‘one person one post’. Last year, he had resigned from the Nitish Kumar cabinet after becoming the state BJP president in place of Deputy CM Samrat Chaudhary.
Saraogi was inducted into the state cabinet in February this year and was allotted the crucial revenue and land reforms portfolio.
However, when BJP emerged as the largest party, following the NDA’s landslide victory, many eyebrows were raised when it was not included in the new cabinet formed last month.
Saragoi, often known for taking a tough stance on issues, started his political career as an ABVP student activist and later became an active member of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) before being appointed president of the Darbhanga city unit of the BJP in 2001.
He made his electoral debut from Darbhanga in the 2005 assembly elections and has been winning this seat continuously since then.
Like Jaiswal, Saragoi is also a Vaishya caste group, which may not be politically influential in Bihar, but is the main support base of the BJP.
