Gwalior, Nov 16 (IANS) Five youths, all friends, died in a road accident on Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior-Jhansi highway on Sunday. Officials told here.
The horrific accident took place near Malwa College around 6 am in the morning when a speeding Fortuner car collided with a tractor-trolley laden with sand, leaving no one alive. All were residents of Gwalior.
According to the police, the Fortuner (sports utility vehicle) was going from Jhansi towards Gwalior when the accident happened. As soon as the vehicle reached Malwa College, a tractor-trolley came out from a turn on the highway.
The car, which was traveling at high speed, reportedly lost control, resulting in a horrific collision.
Speaking to IANS, DSP Nagendra Singh Sikarwar (Crime) said, “The collision was so severe that half of the Fortuner was crushed under the trolley, resulting in instant death of all five people trapped inside.
The damaged wreckage underlined the severity of the accident. Even the car’s airbags burst due to the impact,” he said.
Asked whether the vehicle was being driven recklessly, the senior police officer said, “A vehicle like the Fortuner is not easily recognised; this indicates that it was being driven at a speed of more than 120 kmph. Even airbags could not help. Sadly, all the riders were young and below 25 years of age. Some of them were the only sons of their fathers.”
Police and emergency services reached the spot after receiving the call. With the assistance of local villagers, officials used cutting tools to remove the bodies from the entangled wreckage of the car and tractor-trolley.
The operation was difficult, as the body of the car was almost unrecognizable. The bodies were later sent for post-mortem and investigation has been launched to find out the exact circumstances of the accident.
The identity of the deceased – Kshitij alias Prince Rajawat, Kaushal Bhadoria, Aditya Pratap Singh Jadon, Abhimanyu Singh and one other – has not been confirmed.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the group, all close friends, were returning from a birthday celebration in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, when the accident occurred. The happy occasion turned tragic, leaving the family and local community in shock.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene, with the highway temporarily disrupted as rescue efforts continued for some time. Authorities have taken the tractor driver into custody for questioning and a case has been registered to investigate factors such as speeding, road conditions and possible negligence.
