Five days after US bridge collapse, why are Indian crew still on the wrecked ship?

The Daly cargo ship becomes entangled with the wreckage of a collapsed bridge in Baltimore

New Delhi:

According to the New York Times, 20 Indian crew members from the ship that crashed into a bridge in Baltimore, US, are still on board, responsible for responding to officials’ inquiries and ensuring that the ship completes its daily operations.

The crew won’t be leaving anytime soon until the bridge’s debris is cleared, The New York Times reported. In the meantime, they will take care of the ship.

The ship, the Daly, carrying 4,700 containers to Sri Lanka, crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge after losing power.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said one of the Indian crew members was taken to a hospital in Baltimore where he received stitches. He was returned to the ship, the MEA said.

It could take weeks to clear the wreckage, free the ship and reopen the waterway to one of the busiest ports in the United States. On Saturday, Maryland’s governor said officials planned to remove the first piece of debris.

Chris James, an employee at a consulting firm helping the ship’s management company, Synergy Marine, told the New York Times that the crew had adequate supplies of food and water and enough fuel to keep generators running.

But James told the New York Times that there is currently no firm timetable for retrieving the ship from the wreckage. James said in the New York Times report that the crew may be transferred home once the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Coast Guard complete their investigation.

Crews were praised for sending a distress message to local authorities, which allowed them to stop much of the traffic before the incident. Six people who were among the construction crews repairing potholes on the bridge were killed when it collapsed.

“The information we have is that there are 21 crew members on board, 20 of them are Indians. They are in good condition and in good health. One of them was slightly injured and required stitches, which have been stitched up.” Has returned to the ship, ” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said while responding to a query at the weekly media briefing in Delhi.
