Fish ‘full of birth control pills, antidepressants and cocaine’ after sewage spill

A marine biologist studying Langstone Harbor in Hampshire has discovered that raw sewage from a nearby treatment plant is “drug-drenching” every marine species in the water.

New figures due to be released by the Environment Agency on Wednesday 27 March are expected to show sewage leaks rose to a record high last year.

“The sewage treatment plant behind us takes half a million people’s waste and when it can’t handle it, it throws it here,” Professor Alex Ford told us good morning britain.

“In marine life, we find that they are full of drugs – birth control pills, antidepressants – every marine species we have observed so far is rich in cocaine.”
