Authorities said Moore entered a woman’s apartment on Dec. 10, blamed her for losing his job that day, then grabbed a butter knife and kitchen scissors and threatened to kill himself.
“This warrant was issued based on false and misleading statements presented as fact,” Michaels said. “We are confident the truth will come out under oath in court.”
Michaels did not elaborate on the controversial statement and directed reporters to a court document that was not immediately available. Without those statements, she said, “there is no probable cause for these charges.”
Moore, 39, faces three charges, including felony burglary and stalking. He has pleaded not guilty and must wear a tracking device while on bail. He stood nearby as Michaels spoke outside the courthouse but declined to comment.
Washtenaw County Assistant Prosecutor Katie Rezmierski told the judge she had just received court documents from Michaels. Judge Cedric Simpson set the next hearing for February 17.
When the charges were filed on Dec. 12, Rezmierski said the woman involved cooperated with the university’s investigation of the incident after her relationship with Moore ended. Prosecutors quoted Moore as saying, “You have my blood on your hands.”
Moore and his wife, Kelly, arrived at the courthouse and waited in an adjacent courtroom for the case to be heard. More than 20 members of the news media attended the hearing.
Moore coached the Wolverines for two seasons as the successor to Jim Harbaugh, who won a national championship before resigning to become coach of the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers.
