Strangular The fire and rescue service was called to Albert Dock at around 10 am on Friday.
Seva deployed four fire engines and one aerial platform. The plow costguard rescue team and an ambulance are also on the spot.
The cargo hold of the vessel caught fire, where the scrap metal was being taken. A spokesperson for the fire service said that all people have been held responsible for the board.
Residents and businesses have been advised to keep their windows and doors closed due to smoke in the area.
One local said that “the smell of plastic burning is very strong”.
The council has closed several roads as firefighters have tried to extinguish the explosion. It includes Commercial Road, Kingston Retail Park, Odone Cinema, Ice Arena, English Street, Jackson Street, Hamber Dock Street and Wellington Street.
A BBC reporter identified the ship as a wholesale carrier manufactured in 2006, Altay.
According to Vastal Finder, Atley is currently sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands and has been tangible in Albert Dock from 23 June.
Commenting on social media, local residents stated that this is “absolutely smell”.
Another user commented: “I am sniffing every plug socket and computer at work, wondering if it is in my building. I hope everyone is fine on the dock.”
“I just have to close all my windows. Surprisingly what the burning smell was,” another said.
A spokesman for an affiliated British Ports said: “We currently know about a fire on a ship in Albert Dock in place of a tenant area, and we are assisting firefighting service with a response.”
