Imphal/Guwahati:
A fierce exchange of fire took place today between the security guards of a senior police officer and an armed group in Imphal, the capital of Manipur.
Police said the firing took place outside the house of Additional Superintendent of Police (Operations) M Amit Singh in Wankhei area of Imphal West.
Police said the armed group damaged Mr Singh’s house and a clinic. The clinic belongs to Mr Singh’s family, seven of whose members are doctors.
Sources said at least 20-30 armed men forcibly opened the gate and opened fire.
The police officer’s father said Mr Singh was not at home when the attack took place this evening.
Visuals of the shooting shared on social media showed nearby residents running for cover in the dark amid the loud sounds of automatic gunfire.
Sources said Army, Assam Rifles and state police personnel have taken control of the area and are searching for the armed group.
Today’s incident comes amid ethnic violence and tension in the northeastern state, where armed groups of both the hill-dominated Kuki-Zo tribes and the valley-majority Meitei have been engaged in a battle to control areas near the foothills for the past nine months .
More than 200 people have been killed and thousands internally displaced in the Manipur violence that began in May 2023.
