Two people were arrested Tuesday in connection with the explosion at Harvard Medical School, officials said.
Massachusetts residents Logan David Patterson, 18, and Dominic Frank Cardoza, 20, are both charged with conspiracy to commit damage by means of fire or explosive, according to charging documents.
The explosion occurred early Saturday on the fourth floor of Harvard Medical School’s Goldenson Building, which houses laboratories and offices associated with the school’s neurobiology department.
According to charging documents, witnesses said the couple lit a Roman candle outside the building and placed a cherry bomb inside a locker in the building which exploded. No one was injured.
“When the public learns that the explosion was deliberately carried out the level of concern naturally increases. I would say that these levels may increase even higher boston area,” U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley said at a news conference, noting that the investigation is ongoing but there is no further threat to the university.
According to charging documents, witnesses said the men were visiting Wentworth College for Halloween activities, which also included parties at area schools. On the day of the explosion, surveillance footage captured the two driving toward Harvard Medical School. Witnesses said the pair chose the building because it looked abandoned and broke into it through the roof, charging documents state.
“Let me be clear: planting an explosive device inside a locker at an institution designed for higher education is not a harmless college prank. It is selfish, it is short-sighted, and it is a federal crime,” Ted Docs said. FBISpecial Agent in Charge of.
Neither Foley nor Doc would have guessed about a motive.
Medical school officials said the explosion caused no structural damage and all laboratories and equipment remained intact. The Boston Fire Department determined that the explosion was intentional. Police Authorities said they did not find additional equipment during a search of the building.
University police said an officer responded to a fire alarm that morning and encountered two people running from the building.
