A fifth person has been arrested and charged with murder in a weekend shooting that left six dead and more than a dozen injured. mississippi City, FBI Said.
According to the FBI, 33-year-old Terrognal S. Martin was arrested Tuesday and received a $1 million cash bond. jacksonAdditional arrests are pending, the agency said, without elaborating.
The arrest comes a day after the FBI announced that 29-year-old Tavion L. Powell, 29-year-old William Bryant and 25-year-old Morgan Lattimore have been charged with murder, while 44-year-old LaToya A. Powell has been charged with attempted murder in Friday night’s shooting.
It was not immediately clear Tuesday whether any of the five people charged had an attorney who could comment on the charges.
Washington County Coroner LaQuesha Watkins said four people died at the scene: Oreshama Johnson, 41, Kelvin Plant, 19, Shelbyona Powell, 25, and Kaslyn Johnson, 18. The coroner’s office in Hinds County said another victim, 18-year-old Amos Brand Jr., died from his injuries, he said. His office also received notification from the Shelby County Medical Examiner that 34-year-old JaMichael Jones also died from his injuries.
The shooting occurred as people were celebrating Homecoming weekend in the rural town of Leland in the Northwest delta field, immediately following a high school football game. It was the deadliest of several shootings in Mississippi over the weekend. Other shootings occurred at two Mississippi universities on Saturday, as those schools celebrated their homecoming weekend.
Authorities have not released a possible motive for Friday night’s shooting in Leland, but the FBI said it appears the shooting “stemmed from a disagreement between multiple individuals.”
