The FBI said Monday it has launched a criminal investigation into the collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge last month after it was struck by a cargo ship.

An FBI spokesman confirmed to reporters that FBI investigators boarded the cargo ship “Dali” to conduct court-authorized law enforcement activities regarding the crash. The spokesperson provided no further comment and did not release any other information.

In the early morning of March 26, the cargo ship “Dali” lost power and collided with the support structure, destroying the bridge. Within seconds the bridge collapsed, killing six construction workers on the bridge.

Washington postReports that initially reported the investigation said the FBI was investigating the events leading up to the collision to determine whether the crew left port knowing the ship was experiencing serious operational problems.

The National Transportation Safety Board is also investigating the accident.

Also on Monday, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott announced a partnership with two law firms to “launch legal action to hold wrongdoers accountable” and mitigate harm to city residents.

“Through this engagement, the City of Baltimore will take decisive action to hold accountable all entities responsible for the Key Bridge tragedy, including ship owners, charterers, managers/operators and M&A,” Scott said in a statement. /V Manufacturer Dali and any other third party that may be held liable.”

Earlier this month, US President Joe Biden took an aerial tour of the site of the bridge collapse. The tour comes after the White House announced the release of $60 million in federal emergency relief funds for initial cleanup and repair costs in Maryland.

It also announced that the U.S. Small Business Administration will provide low-interest loans to qualifying businesses affected by the accident.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said it expects to open limited access to the Port of Baltimore by the end of the month. The channel will allow ships to enter and leave the port, the agency said.
