Two days after an officer at Bengaluru’s Rajajinagar station stopped a farmer from boarding a metro train because of his “disordered” clothes, the National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident.

The NHRC said in a statement that it had found that “the contents of the media report, if true, constitute a violation of human rights”. It says, “No person shall be denied access to public transport on the basis of the nature of the clothes he is wearing. If anyone has any objectionable material, he shall be stopped only in accordance with the provisions of law.” Could.”

The commission has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary of Karnataka and the Managing Director of Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) and sought a detailed report within four weeks.

It said the report should include steps taken or proposed to ensure that such incidents do not happen again.

The rights body also posted about the incident on Twitter and wrote: “NHRC has taken suo motu cognizance of the report of a farmer being stopped from boarding a metro train by an officer because of his dirty dress. On February 26, an officer at the baggage checkpoint inside Rajajinagar Metro station stopped a farmer carrying a large sack on his head and did not allow him to enter the platform despite having a ticket. The video of the incident is now viral on social media.

In the video, several passengers were heard protesting the officer’s decision. He asked the officer whether there is any dress code for passengers in Metro Rail and whether the rail service is only for VIPs.
