New Delhi, October 9 (IANS) Congress Member of Parliament (MP) from Wayanad Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday called on government agencies to promote farm stay tourism to bring urban children closer to nature.
He said on
Posting a video of his previous interaction with representatives of agri tourism and homestays at Carmel Agro Farm, Anakkampoyil, a village near Thiruvambady town in Kozhikode district of Kerala, the Congress leader said, “Farm stay tourism needs proper encouragement and promotion from the government.”
In her social media post on X, she said, “This meeting with 27 entrepreneurial farmers who came together to launch the Farm Stay initiative was a pleasure! It was held on a farm owned by a wonderful couple – Elsie and Dominic.”
He said, “Elsie is a wealth of knowledge about different plants, their uses and cultivation! I told her she was very lucky because she never had to buy anything – her farm grows everything you could think of.”
Sharing details of her interactions with growers in Kerala, the Congress leader said, “Each of the 27 farmers I met grows something unique (some of them have won awards for their produce) coffee, spices, all kinds of fruits, some do fish farming, others keep ducks and exotic animals, one gentleman even keeps tarantulas.”
Suggesting promotion of farm stay tourism, he said that not only school children but adults can also benefit from it.
“Even for adults, this is an interesting and fun way to learn about and experience farming. At the same time, it will provide a new stream of income for many small farmers who could do with support,” he said.
On Wednesday, the Congress leader had raised the issue of flood relief for the farmers of Wayanad.
“The central government’s refusal to waive loans of people affected by the devastating 2024 Wayanad landslide is shocking. Especially when loans of some big business houses have been waived off without hesitation. These loans represent the lives of people who have endured unimaginable pain through no fault of their own – their total amount is paltry in comparison,” he wrote in a post on Twitter on Wednesday.
“The Kerala High Court has said that when people needed help most, the central government failed them. I couldn’t agree more,” she said.
