Duke Rufus, famous MMA instructor who trained ufc Stars Antony Pettis and Tyron Woodley The player, who won world titles after his career in the sport, has died at the age of 55.
Scott Joffe, Rufus’ business partner and coach at RufusSport MMA Academy in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, announced the news in a Facebook post on Friday.
Rufus died “peacefully in his sleep,” Joffe said.
Joffe wrote, “Duke was more than a renowned trainer and champion kickboxer – he was a mentor, innovator, father and friend whose influence changed the landscape of mixed martial arts.”
“His knowledge, charisma and passion inspired countless fighters to reach heights they never imagined possible. From world champions to day one students, everyone who crossed his path felt his genuine caring and unwavering belief in their ability. His loss leaves an irreparable void in the sport and in the hearts of all who knew him.”
Rufus founded the RufusSport Academy and it was here that he shaped the careers of many fighters who went on to win titles in the UFC, including Woodley, Anthony Pettis, his younger brother Sergio Pettis, and Ben Askren.
Former UFC lightweight champion Antony Pettis paid tribute to Rufus on Instagram. “When my father died you took me in and became my father,” Pettis said. “Together we did the impossible and made it to the top! I will always make you proud. You have taught me so much. I will make sure your legacy continues.”
Rufus won numerous titles in kickboxing before moving into coaching, coming at the WKA, WAKO, WKBA, KICK and IKF levels. His older brother Rick Rufus was also a famous kickboxing champion.
