Family of football player Cody Fisher ‘scarred for life’ after murder, 23

A 23-year-old footballer murdered in a “horrific” revenge killing texted his mother on the night he was killed to say he would see her the next morning.

Former Birmingham City Academy player Cody Fisher died after being stabbed in the chest in an attack planned in a busy Birmingham nightclub on Boxing Day 2022.

Remy Gordon, 23, and Kami Carpenter, 22, were found on Monday on suspicion of murdering Mr Fisher after initially blaming each other for his death .

His mother Tracey told ITV News: “The last text he sent was – ‘See you in the morning, I’ll be home around ten o’clock’. “So I couldn’t make any sense of it.

“I am the proudest mom. I am so honored to call him my son. He is an absolute dream.”

A 10-week trial heard Mr Fisher was attacked with a knife smuggled through security into Digbeth’s Crane nightclub in a pre-planned “revenge” over a minor incident on Christmas Eve.

Birmingham Crown Court heard Mr Fisher was stabbed in the chest, puncturing a heart valve and pronounced dead at the scene, while a close friend of the victim was chased and kicked but managed to get to his feet and escape.

His uncle Danny Norman added that his death had left him scarred for life, telling his sister that her son’s stabbing to death was the “worst thing” he had ever done in his life.

“I had to explain to my sister that he was gone. It was the worst thing I’ve ever done in my life, having to tell my sister that her blue-eyed boy was gone,” Mr Norman told ITV News.

Explaining the alleged motive for the killing, prosecutor Michael Duck KC said: “The prosecution allege this was a coordinated and planned attack involving extreme violence.

“The attack on Cody Fisher was no accident. This was not a moment of temper – this was a planned act of revenge.”

The court heard Mr Fisher had done little other than “touch” Gordon’s back at another nightclub two days before the murder while the killer was out looking for an argument with someone.

Duck said Fisher refused to apologize for doing nothing wrong after being threatened with violence and leaving the nightclub with friends.

Mr Darke explained that Gordon was embarrassed and frustrated at his inability to intimidate Mr Fisher and decided to “break him” by calling for information about the victim on social media app Snapchat.

Mobile phone footage of Fisher lying on the floor after being stabbed in the chest and leg on Boxing Day was played in court.

Mr Duck told the jury: “The weapon was found – paramedics found it when they came to treat him and it was still embedded in his chest as he lay on the ground.”

Judge Paul Farrell remanded Carpenter and Gordon in custody after the Easter Bank Holiday to await sentencing. He thanked the jurors for their service and excused them from serving on a jury for 20 years.
