Families were evacuated after the fire broke up at Bristol Maternity Hospital

Matte Burdon of Weston-Supreme-Mayer told the BBC that he was inside the maternity unit with his wife when the fire broke out and his wife was in labor with her third child.

“I went out to get some food, came back and obviously the alarm was closed,” he told the broadcaster, saying that his partner was safe inside.

“He said that all the partners had to leave. Everyone was going down very fast to get out of the fire. When we came out, I saw black smoke, all in flames.”

The Green Party co -leader and MP for Bristol Central wrote on social media: “Scenes from St. Michael’s hospital look incredibly disturbed – my views are with all those who had to be emptied under such scary conditions, and thanks to emergency services for their bravery.

“I will keep a close watch on the situation because it develops.”

Smoke can be seen across the city including the Bristol Temple Meads station, as the video featured several firefighters who were struggling with the explosion.

About an hour after the fire service confirmed the fire, it said: “We can confirm that the fire is safely extinguished. The cause of the fire will be investigated. ,

Residents have been asked to expect delays and use alternative routes, as the nearby St. Michaels is closed between its junctions with Hortfield Road and Tinde Avenue.
