Ahead of Maharashtra civic polls, Deputy Chief Minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Ajit Pawar on Sunday, December 28, announced an alliance between his faction and the Sharadchandra Pawar-led NCP faction for the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) elections, declaring that the Pawar family is politically united again.

Addressing party workers at a campaign rally in Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pawar said the decision to contest the elections simultaneously on January 15 was taken while finalizing the list of candidates for the civic body, according to News18.

‘Ghadi’ and ‘Tuatari’ became one

Ajit Pawar said that while finalizing the list of candidates for the Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal elections, “The Nationalist Congress Party and the Nationalist Congress Party Sharadchandra Pawar faction decided to contest the elections together in Pimpri-Chinchwad. Because of this, the family will come together once again.”

Referring to the election symbols of both the factions, he said, “For the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation elections, ‘Ghadi’ and ‘Tutari’ (trumpet) have united. According to News18, the family has come together.”

His comments drew applause from party workers, many of whom see the alliance as a significant development in one of the major urban political hubs of Maharashtra.

Focus on growth and sustainability

Acknowledging the speculations following the party split, Pawar said there remains uncertainty over the future course of action.

He said, “There were many questions in the minds of people as to what will happen. Sometimes some decisions have to be taken in the interest of the development of Maharashtra.”

He also indicated that discussions on seat sharing were already underway at the local level. “I have discussed seat-sharing with the leaders here and that will also be announced soon,” Pawar said while urging workers to avoid controversial comments, according to News 18.

Describing the alliance as development-centric, he told party workers, “We are the people who work for development. We will oust those who tried to put this municipal corporation in debt.”

Further talk from PCMC; goes to mumbai alone

According to a report in News18, discussions are also going on between the two factions of the NCP for a possible understanding in the Pune Municipal Corporation elections, which suggests that the PCMC alliance may be extended.

Meanwhile, the NCP has opted to contest the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections independently. The party released its first list of 37 candidates for the Mumbai civic polls on Sunday, December 28, which also includes three members of Nawab Malik’s family.
