Donald Trump’s campaign has denied allegations that the former president fell asleep on the first day of his hush money trial in New York, calling the claims “100 percent fake news.”
Court reporters at Monday’s hearing observed moments when Trump appeared to doze off. Social media erupted with memes and a series of nicknames in response.
The Independent quoted the Trump campaign as saying: “This is 100% fake news coming from ‘journalists’ who are not even in the courtroom.”
Monday marked the start of jury selection in Trump’s trial, where he faces 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to cover up hush-money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels.
Trump allegedly paid Daniels $130,000 in exchange for her silence about the 2006 affair, but Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The trial became the first criminal prosecution of a sitting or former president in U.S. history.
Despite strong denials from the Trump campaign, reports of Trump taking a nap generated considerable attention on social media, leading to a new online nickname for the 77-year-old former president, “Sleepy Don.”
Even President Joe Biden’s campaign has not missed an opportunity to take advantage of the situation. The reaction was in response to Trump’s habit of referring to Biden as “Sleepy Joe” during the campaign.
President Biden’s team shared video of New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman discussing Trump’s alleged court conduct on CNN.
“His head would hang down. He wouldn’t notice the note handed to him by his attorney. His chin would remain on his chest and his mouth would remain slack,” the CNN team wrote on Twitter.
The Biden-Harris campaign also included a meme poking fun at Trump’s late-night posts on Truth Social, which contrast with alleged court naps.
However, President Biden himself has not commented on the incident on his main account.
