A special court of the National Investigation Agency on Thursday convicted and sentenced two people to jail in the 2019 Lucknow fake currency case. Both the accused were sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment each and ordered to pay a fine.
In January 2020, a juvenile was also convicted in this case and sentenced to two years, one month and 10 days in prison. Now, Phoolchand, a resident of Lakhimpur Kheri, and Aminul Islam of Malda, West Bengal, have been convicted and sentenced in the case, which relates to the seizure of high quality ‘Fake Indian Currency Notes’ (FICN).
On November 25, 2019, the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) recovered fake notes from Phoolchand, Aminul and accused Kishore near Itaunja toll plaza on the Lucknow-Sitapur highway. The notes were of Rs 500 denomination while 15 notes were of Rs 2,000 denomination. The NIA took charge of the case on January 20, 2020, following which it filed a charge sheet against five accused after investigation.
According to the NIA investigation, the accused had conspired to smuggle, procure and possess high quality FICN. The fake currency was being supplied from Malda, and further supplied to various persons or consignments in UP.
The NIA said Aminul was the key conspirator and used to bring consignments of FICN from Malda, while Phoolchand and his associates used to receive the consignments.
