Kolkata, Oct 19 (IANS) Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday faced opposition from a section of people in Raidighi in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district.
When he was traveling in the district to inaugurate Kali Puja, people hit his car and raised slogans against him.
The incident comes a day after miscreants attacked the convoy of BJP’s Darjeeling MP Raju Bista in North Bengal and weeks after serious attacks on BJP MP Khagen Murmu and party MLA Shankar Ghosh.
It is noteworthy that in August, the officer’s convoy was attacked in Cooch Behar district of North Bengal, where he had gone to lead a protest rally.
On Sunday, many people, including women, protested in Raidighi as soon as the officer’s convoy entered the area. He protested against the Centre’s move to stop funding for 100 days of work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) in West Bengal. However, the convoy did not suffer any major damage and officers were also not injured in the attack.
“In South 24 Parganas district, today I faced repeated attacks by illegal Bangladeshi Muslims. The blockage, vandalism and anarchy was done by none other than TMC Zilla Parishad member Rekha Ghazi with the aid and support of SP Koteshwar Rao. Several attempts were made to stop my car at at least seven places, and the attack happened right in front of Lalpur,” LoP wrote on Twitter. Seminary.”
He said, “This is a social event (inauguration of Kali Puja). All Hindus have come for this event. I have come here as a Hindu. I have not come here to seek votes for the party. I have not come here with my party’s flag. They are trying to stop me on the road. They are beating cars. They are standing in front of cars in protest. I have come here to attend a religious event. I have not come here as a BJP leader.”
The BJP leader alleged that infiltrators have entered the area and are trying to destroy democracy.
“In fact, these people, who are mainly illegal infiltrators, are worried about their fate because of the SIR process, so they are venting their anger. This area is adjacent to Bangladesh and the proximity has allowed them to settle here with the help of the infiltrator-friendly TMC eco system,” he said on X.
“Can one not freely participate in any religious event in the state of West Bengal, without facing obstructions from Hindu fundamentalists? They cannot scare me, I will come back even during Jagadhatri Puja.
The official said, “That is why you, who are the original inhabitants of this district, are not able to follow your religion and cultural programs properly. Those who have money are being forced to sell their land and go to Sonarpur, Baruipur and Kolkata. In fact, the way the number of Hindus is decreasing in Bangladesh, Hindus are on the verge of disappearing.”
