Facebook parent company Meta wins Brazilian court order overturning decision to stop using its name

US Meta, formerly known as Facebook, will be renamed in 2021 (representative)

Brasilia, Brazil:

Facebook parent Meta won a Brazilian court order on Friday, overturning a previous ruling that banned it from using the name in the South American country due to confusion with another company.

Mark Zuckerberg’s tech company was ordered to stop using its name in Brazil for 30 days in late February after a Brazilian computer services provider won a favorable ruling that it already owned the rights to the name and that it had been banned by the U.S. brand because of Misreferenced in Brazilian trademark. More than 100 lawsuits filed.

Meta Brazil did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside normal business hours. The company can still appeal the decision.

US Meta, formerly known as Facebook, changed its name and rebranded in 2021, focusing on building a “metaverse”, a shared virtual environment.
