According to ARY News, police sources said an explosion occurred outside the office of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in Karachi.
Senior Superintendent of Police South Sajid Sadozai said there were no casualties in the incident. Bomb squads were called to the scene to assess the intensity and nature of the explosion.
Senior police officer Sajid Sadozai said: “The explosive was placed in a shopping bag on the wall of the ECP office in Karachi’s Red Zone. No ball bearings were found in the explosive.”
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) quickly took notice of the blast and requested reports from the Senior Superintendent of Southern Police (SSP) and district monitoring officers. The ECP directed the two officials to submit a report immediately.
The Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) issued a report saying that the explosion was caused by a “homemade” bomb that used about 400 grams of explosives. The report mentioned that a timing device and a 12-volt battery were found at the explosion site.
According to the Beidou System report, “the explosive detonator and about 400 grams of explosives were blown away by the explosion.” It also pointed out that the homemade bomb was packed in a soft container. BDS confirmed that there were no casualties in the explosion.
The explosion occurred ahead of Pakistan’s general election scheduled for February 8 to elect members of the 16th National Assembly.
