Execution of Indian nurse Nimisha Priya on charges of murder in Yemen was postponed

The execution of a 37 -year -old nurse from Kerala, Nimisha Priya, which was determined for July 16 in Yemen, has been postponed by the Government of India after “concrete efforts”, sources on Tuesday cited ANI citing local authorities.

According to sources, the adjournment provides additional time to his family to interact on a mutually agreed solution amidst diplomatic efforts by Indian authorities as they maintain regular communication with the office of Yemeni jail authorities and prosecutors, while to secure this rebuke to navigate the condition of the situation.

Sources said, “In the case of Ms. Nimisha Priya, it has been revealed that local authorities in Yemen have postponed the prescribed execution for July 16, 2025,” the sources said.

“GOI, which has been providing all possible assistance in the case since the beginning of the case, has discovered more time for Ms. Nimisha Priya’s family to reach a mutually agreed solution with the other side in recent times. Despite being involved in sensitivity, Indian authorities have regularly touched the local jail authorities and prosecutors.

The 37 -year -old nurse from Kerala was executed on 16 July, when a trial court in Yemen convicted him of killing Yamani National, a decision that the country’s Supreme Judicial Council retained in November 2023.

Earlier on Monday, while presenting the Central Government on the matter in the Supreme Court, India’s Attorney General (AGI) said that the Government of India is making every effort to help Priya.

He further informed the court that talks were going on with the Yemeni officials, in which the public prosecutor Priya handle the case, to secure the suspension of the execution order, until the conversation can be followed.

However, AGI also admitted that the Indian government’s ability to intervene is limited, describing it as a “a very complex issue”, “There is no way to know what is happening (in Yemen).”

“There is nothing that we can … It’s not like any other part of the world (where possible negotiations can be held),” said AGI.
Hearing the central government’s presentation, Justice Sandeep Mehta expressed deep concern and commented that it would be “very sad if she (Priya) was to lose her life.” The court will continue the hearing of the case on July 18. (ANI)
