A slowdown in the rising costs of energy, air travel and hotels last month helped offset a jump in inflation on petrol, kitchen appliances and groceries, meaning the UK overall rate fell slightly to 3.6% from 3.8%.
The biggest downward pressure on prices came from domestic gas and electricity, although food and beverage inflation rose again in October after easing last month, rising to 4.9% from 4.5% in September.
According to Consumer Price Index data, the average cost of gas rose 2.1% year over year in October, a sharp change from September, when the annual rate was 13.0%. National Statistical Office (ONS).
Electricity Prices also eased, rising 2.7% in October compared with 8.0% in September.
Airfares rose just 0.9% year-on-year last month, down from a 5.5% rise in September, while the average cost of hotels and similar accommodations declined by just 0.1% from a 2.7% rise.
inflation Food and beverage selection eased in October, with the average price of butter, fruit, tea, chocolate, soft drinks and prepared meals increasing less year-on-year.
Rice prices declined 2.4% year on year, a bigger decline than the 1.5% decline in September.
The price of children’s clothing also fell sharply last month (down 3.4% year on year) compared to September (down 2.3%).
The upward pressure on the overall rate of inflation came from the mix of goods and services.
The average cost of some kitchen appliances jumped from a year-on-year price decline in September to a year-on-year increase in October.
These included iron, fridge and freezer, coffee machine and tea maker.
Cleaning equipment prices rose 4.0% year-on-year last month after falling 7.5% year-on-year in September.
Inflation accelerated in October for many everyday grocery items, including margarine, whole milk, crisps, potatoes, yogurt, coffee, bread and cereals.
Petrol’s annual inflation rate declined from -2.1% in September to 0.5% in October, driven by a jump in the price of refueling at the pumps, while diesel rate increased from 0% in September to 2.8% last month.
The average cost of cinema, theater and concert tickets also rose faster year-on-year last month (up 4.7%) compared to September (up 0.1%).
