Ex-NHS worker jailed for poisoning young boy with ‘industrial quantities’ of laxatives

A former NHS worker has been jailed for giving an “industrial amount” of laxatives to a young boy, which affected his development and mobility.

Tracy Menhinick, from Aberdeen, poisoned the child when he was between three and six years old and was taken to hospital when he was five, weighing less than 10kg.

The 52-year-old then agreed to undergo treatment, surgery and surgery on him, which she knew were unnecessary and “all of which would result in his permanent disfigurement, permanent impairment and risk to his life”.

Following a trial at the High Court in Aberdeen, she was found guilty of “willfully” abusing the child on multiple occasions over a three-year period from 2014 in a manner likely to cause the child unnecessary suffering or harm to his health.

She has now been jailed for seven years when she appeared at the High Court in Glasgow on Tuesday.

An expert witness told jurors the child resembled a concentration camp survivor and was taken to hospital in October 2016 over concerns about weight loss and explosive diarrhea.

Observations by hospital staff revealed that his condition would deteriorate dramatically while under Meninick’s care, and tests at Great Ormond Street Hospital confirmed the presence of lactulose in his stool samples.

The abuse occurred on multiple occasions at one location in Aberdeen, at the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital and elsewhere.

The child’s name cannot be revealed for legal reasons.
