The 36-year-old British heavyweight boxer was injured when his Lexus Jeep collided with what authorities called a “stationary red commercial Chinese truck.” Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday.

Authorities have so far given conflicting views on the cause of the incident and have not released details about the identity of the deceased. However, it is understood Mr Joshua was one of two men who survived.

Video taken after the incident shows Joshua sitting in the car surrounded by glass and debris. A later video showed the boxer frowning outside the car.

Here’s everything we know so far.

Where did the accident occur?

The Lexus Jeep that Anthony Joshua was traveling in was involved in a collision on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday.

Said to be one of the most dangerous highways in the country, the highway consists of a 127.6-kilometer (79.3-mile) highway connecting Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, and Lagos, Nigeria’s largest city.

Authorities said the incident occurred near Sagamu in southwestern Nigeria. It is understood Mr Joshua has family links to the area.

Who is involved?

The identities of those killed or injured in the crash have not been released, except for Mr Joshua.

Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps said in a tweet that five adult males were involved in the crash.

“A total of five adult males were involved in this incident,” the Legion wrote. “Two people tragically lost their lives, one was injured and the other two escaped unscathed. Anthony Joshua survived with minor injuries.”

It added that the seriously injured man had been transferred to hospital.

It is unclear which vehicle the two deceased persons were traveling in.

What did the authorities say about the accident?

Authorities have so far given conflicting accounts of the events leading up to the crash.

Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps said preliminary findings suggested the jeep “lost control” while trying to overtake another vehicle. It added that the vehicle was suspected of speeding.

“Preliminary investigation results show that the Lexus Jeep was suspected of speeding on the corridor, lost control while overtaking, and hit a parked truck on the side of the road,” the report reads.

However, Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo said ESPN: “The cause of the accident was that a tire of AJ’s vehicle burst, causing the driver to lose control and the vehicle suddenly swerved towards a truck parked on the roadside.”

Is Anthony Joshua injured?

The former world champion boxer is believed to have escaped the accident with only minor injuries, according to authorities.

The BBC reported that Mr Joshua had been taken to hospital and police told the news agency that he suffered minor injuries but was “fine”. It was unclear whether he was the man the Corps said was “seriously injured.”

Footage emerged after the incident showed Mr Joshua dazed and shocked but able to exit the vehicle.

At the same time, his Promoter Eddie Hearn told daily mail: “I was on holiday and woke up to the news of this incident.

“We are trying to contact Anthony and at the same time we don’t want to speculate on his condition, but fortunately from what I have seen in the images he appears to be doing fine. We are awaiting further information on what happened and will update in due course.”
