“Things aren’t failures, they’re not distractions – it’s all part of your journey,” he said. “Everything is temporary: pain, happiness. Don’t hold on to either of them too much. Because, as an actor, you will be seduced by things. You will be treated well and then you will be completely ignored. So these are the external things that don’t matter or give you stability.”
Describing the book’s approach as “brilliant” and “practical”, Beecham said it helped him manage the natural unpredictability of working life as an actor – especially in an industry full of ups and downs. “Everything is constantly changing and we must adapt to it,” he said. “I like the Buddhist perspective, and Thubten talks about his difficulties and how he went through a difficult bereavement.”
“It’s also useful for acting,” she adds. “That’s when you have to manipulate your emotions and do it well. It’s not about the external thing or the product – it’s about the journey.”
