Lawmaker European Parliament on Wednesday voted for banning vegetarian protein with words like “Stek” or “Meat”.
The MPs gave 532 to 78 votes to define the meat as “edible parts of animals” and reduce the use of words such as Stake, Escelope, Sausage, or Burger for animals, not for plant-based products. Before going back to the Executive Branch of the European Union and then before going to 27 member countries of the block for further interaction, the proposal will go to a parliamentary committee to be clear.
A orthodox German MLA and former farmer, Seel Lav, said it was misleading to use meat-related words for vegetarian products.
He said in a parliamentary debate on Tuesday, “Now, we are not talking about banning vegetables or plant-based options, not at all. But I think words should speak for ourselves and mean them.”
His colleague from the liberal NEOS party, Austrian MEP Anna Stangakh said that consumers do not easily fool with food labels on non-meat products.
He said, “Beef tomatoes have no beef … The fingers of women are not made up of the fingers of real women.” “Let’s trust consumers and stop this hot dog localism.”
