Steve Borthwick on George Furbank’s return from injury

“George has worked really hard to come back from injury. He had eight or nine weeks of constant training and then two or three weeks with some impact. He’s back on the grass and is aiming to get game time this week. He hasn’t been selected for England for a while. He made 15 appearances and provided 10 cover. I’m delighted to have picked him up.”

Steve Borthwick in his England squad

“I think this team has a great blend. Over the last period you’ve seen consistency in player selection and building connections between players. You can see that on the grass.

“We have a group of senior Test players and young players who have performed very well and have brought their talents into the team. I am very happy for Billy Sela, a player with extraordinary talent and potential. Greg Fisilau and Emmanuel Iyogun have both played extremely well.

“Obviously, do we want all the props to fit in and be available? Yes. But that’s something we’ve planned for. We’ve planned out the depth chart and know who’s ready to come in.”

Van Puertfleet praises England squad’s depth after Argentina tour

“The lads who have done well will continue to wear the shirt and take a step forward.

“It’s a great sign for people who are on the cusp of it, people in and around the team, that if you get opportunities and perform well, you’ll be rewarded.”

Who are England’s uncapped players?

Emmanuel Iyogun: Northampton’s slacker Iyogun has featured for England before but is yet to make his senior debut. The 25-year-old has made great progress at Saints over the past few seasons, particularly as a scrum-half, and has responded well to the challenge of summer signing Italy international Danilo Fischetti.

Velixa Serra: Serra has long been tipped for big things but he has been stuck behind three international tight ends at Bath but has still impressed with his chances this season. Aged just 20, he has made a quick transition from the age group to the senior side, following young conservatives such as Asher Opoku-Fordjour and Afolabi Fasogbon – all three of whom were part of the England squad that won the 2024 U20 World Cup.

Greg Fischlaw: Fischlaw has returned to his best this season and has emerged as Exeter’s super-sporty number eight. He has been on the radar since breaking into the Chiefs first team in the 2023/24 season and will be fighting for a place in the back row.
