Ahmedabad, October 4 (IANS) When Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, he introduced a development model that would later change the entire nation.
The center of this change is the ‘Digital India’ campaign inspired by the e-Gram Vishwagram project launched during his tenure as the Chief Minister of Gujarat.
On January 23, 2009, he launched the e-Gram Vishwagram Yojana, connecting more than 13,000 gram panchayats in Gujarat through broadband connectivity.
This initiative played an important role in changing the landscape of rural Gujarat, making government services more accessible to villagers through digital means.
Prakash Thacor, sarpanch of Vadtal Gram Panchayat in Kheda, said that the e-Gram Vishwagram scheme brought revolutionary changes in reaching digital services for rural communities.
The scheme empowered the village panchayats of Gujarat, so that the residents can get benefits from various government schemes and services with just one click.
Taluka Development Officer Nilesh Patel in Nadid said that 321 types of KYC documents such as death and life certificates are now digitally provided, simplifying access to citizens.
After assuming the responsibility of leading the country, Prime Minister Modi expanded this vision at the national level.
On 1 July 2015, he launched the Digital India Mission, which aims to strengthen India digitally and connect the most remote and poor areas with digital facilities.
Prime Minister Modi emphasized the goal of the mission: to enable every citizen to reach efficiently to digital resources and government services, regardless of the location.
As a result of the ‘Digital India’ campaign, the number of Internet users in India has exceeded 1 billion in the last decade.
Among them, more than 420 million are from rural areas.
Mobile phone users have also crossed 1.17 billion.
In addition, there are over 581,000 general service centers (CSCs) across the country, with more than 452,000 rural areas.
From banking services and online financial transactions to direct profit transfer (DBT) of government funds, these advances have been made possible through ‘Digital India’ initiative.
Today, the campaign is not only strengthening the citizens, but also strengthening India’s digital economy.
