Em Jaishankar meets counterparts at the BRICS summit from Iran, Mexico

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a meeting with his counterparts from Iran and Mexico on the banks of the BRICS summit at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Sunday (local time).

Jaishankar met Mexico’s Foreign Affairs Secretary, Juan Ramon de lahtete. The two leaders discussed further advancement of partnership, focusing on health, digital, technology and location.

In a statement shared on X, Jaishankar said, “Mexico’s Foreign Affairs Secretary Juan Ramon de lahte was happy to meet Rio de Janeiro. Today discussed further advancement of our partnership by focusing on health, digital, technology and location.”

Jaishankar met Abbas Aragchi at Iran’s Foreign Minister, Rio de Janeiro and focused on recent regional developments.

Jaishankar posted on X, “This evening is happy to meet Iran’s FM @araGhchi. Our conversation focuses on recent regional developments.”

Earlier, Jaishankar held a meeting on the banks of the BRICS summit on Sunday with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavarov and discussed bilateral cooperation, West Asia, BRICS and Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

In a post on X, Jaishankar said, “It is good to meet Russia’s FM Sergei Lavarov on the edge of #Brics2025. Discussed bilateral cooperation, West Asia, BRICS and SCOs.”

Russia’s Foreign Ministry also shared a picture of Jaishankar and Lavarov, stating that the two leaders held talks on the occasion of the BRICS summit.

The 17th BRICS Summit held under the chairmanship of Brazil brought new members from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa as well as new members from Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, UAE and Indonesia.

During the BRICS summit on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that there should be a “principle” rather than a “convenience” case to condemn terrorism, it was described as the “most serious challenge” to humanity in the current global scenario.

Addressing the BRICS session on peace and security, PM Modi highlighted the recent terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir on 22 April and reminded of the threat of terrorism for global peace and called for unwavering international solidarity.

He said that the attack was a shock to India’s “soul, identity and dignity”, in which international support was accepted that the nation received in solidarity. “Terrorism has become the most serious challenge for humanity today.

“Recently India suffered an inhuman and cowardly terrorist attack. On April 22, the terrorist attack in Pahgam was a direct attack on the soul, identity and dignity of India. The attack was not only for India but for the whole of humanity. In this hour of sorrow, I express my heartfelt gratitude, which supports me.

He said, “Condemning terrorism should be our ‘principle’, not only a ‘facility’. If we see for the first time in which country the attack was done and against whom, it would be a betrayal against humanity,” he said. (AI)
